Intermittent fasting causes metabolic stress and leucopenia in young mice

Overweight and obesity became the worldwide epidemic resulting from overeating especially when a so-called Western diet rich in carbohydrates and fats is used. It is widely accepted that limitation of food consumption could help to withstand such state of adult organism, but information about younger groups is contradictory. The present study was undertaken to characterize the effects of intermittent fasting, using an every other day (EOD) fasting/feeding protocol, on hematological parameters and biochemical blood plasma indices in young mice from one to two months old. It was shown that intermittently fasted mice were characterized by a reduced body weight, reduced total number of blood leucocytes, lower glucose and lactate levels and higher activity of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in blood plasma as compared with the age-matched control mice. To gain the same mass EOD animals needed to eat more food than ad libitum fed animals. These differences may probably be explained by a need to expend certain resources to combat stress induced by intermittent fasting. Our data showed that EOD feeding at a young age may negatively influence young mammals.

Antioxidant defense system state in blood plasma and heart muscle of rats under the influence of histamine and sodium hypoclorite

There is a wide spectrum of antihistamine drugs in the pharmaceutical market, however all these chemical preparations cause side effects. Therefore, new alternative ways for histamine detoxication are to be found. For this aim in our experiment sodium hypochlorite was used because its solution possesses strong oxidizing properties. The influence of histamine and sodium hypochlorite on the antioxidant defence system state of blood plasma and cardiac muscle in rats has been researched. It was shown, that the investigated factors result in the disruption of the antioxidant system. It was found that histamine injection in concentration of 1 and 8 μg/kg in plasma leads to the increase of superoxi­de dismutase activity during all the experiment. When studying enzymes, that catalyze hydroperoxides and Н2О2 decomposition it was shown that under the influence of histamine in a dose 1 μg/kg, the glutathione peroxidase activity increased on the 1st day of the experiment. However, on the 7th day of the experiment the increase of both glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity was fixed. The deviation in superoxide dismutase function in rats plasma under the action of sodium hypochlorite has been established. The activity of enzymes that decompose Н2О2 and hydroperoxides were inhibi­ted. Under the influence of histamine in the heart tissues we have stated the disturbance of superoxide dismutase work and increase of catalase activity and decrease of glutathione peroxidase activity. The influence of sodium hypochlorite on the myocardium of intact animals as well as joint influence of sodium hypochlorite and histamine result in the increase of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity and lead to the conside­rable decline of activity of glutathione peroxidase.

“Three sources and three component parts” of free oligosaccharides

Metabolism of glycoproteins and glycolipids is accompanied by the appearance of unbound structural analogues of the carbohydrate portion of glycoconjugates or so called free oligosaccharides. There are their several sources inside the cell: 1) multistep pathways of N-glycosylation, 2) the cell quality control and ER-associated degradation of misglycosylated and /or misfolded glycoproteins, 3) lysosomal degradation of mature glycoconjugates. In this review the information about the ways of free oligosaccharides appearance in different cell compartments and details of their structures depending on the source is summarized. In addition, extracellular free oligosaccharides, their structures and changes under normal and pathological conditions are discussed.

Fatty acid composition of phospholipids and esterified cholesterol of the blood plasma of rabbit under arginine acute pancreatitis

The content and fatty acid composition of phospholipids and esterified cholesterol were studied in the blood plasma of rabbits under acute arginine pancreatitis and its correction using linseed oil. It is established that the transport and anti-inflammatory functions of blood plasma deteriorates under acute arginine pancreatitis due to a decrease of the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in phospholi­pids. The amount of cholesterol esterified with saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids increases in the blood plasma of rabbits. The concentration of phospholipids­ and esterified cholesterol is normali­zed and their fatty acid composition is improved in the lipid composition of the blood plasma of rabbits with acute arginine pancreatitis fed with linseed oil.
